Milton Area Youth Center Rummage Sale

MAYC RUMMAGE SALE FUNDRAISER THIS SATURDAY 8AM-4PM AT MILTON COLLEGE MAIN HALL.

Donations will be accepted Thursday from noon to 7:00pm and Friday from 8:00am-7:00pm. Please pass the word that Friday is the best day to drop things off due to MAYC’s limited storage space. Any items that do not sell will be donated to the Edgerton Community Outreach at 4pm on Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to help set up on Friday (just drop in) and to help during the sale on Saturday.

Clean Sweep - October 7th and 8th

The annual Rock County Clean Sweep will be taking place October 7th and 8th.  The Clean Sweep provides residents an opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials in a safe way.  Click on this link for more information: http://www.co.rock.wi.us/index.php/clean-sweep.

On October 7th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Clean Sweep will be in Orfordville at the Rock County Highway Garage, 734 W. Beloit Street, Orfordville, WI.  On October 8th from 8 a.m. to noon Clean Sweep will be in Janesville at the Rock County Highway Garage, 3715 Newville Rd., Janesville, WI.

There is also a FREE electronics recycling event that will take place on October 8th from 8 a.m. to noon at Universal Recycling Technologies (URT), 2535 Beloit Avenues, Janesville, WI.  Items accepted include TVs, computers, small appliances, and printers.

Public Works Facility Update

The metal exterior of the new Public Works Facility is in the process of being unloaded at the site.

October Events in Milton

The month of October is turning into a busy month.  Start making your plans to be in Milton!

October 1st:

The Milton Area Youth Center is holding a rummage sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Milton College Main Hall.  Donations and volunteers are needed.  Call 608-436-3637.  Click on the photo of the flyer to the right for more information.

The Milton House will be hosting Heritage Day, a FREE family event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The 1st Brigade Band will be performing Civil War band music at 1 p.m.  Woodcarvers, wheelwright, spinners, weavers, bucksinners, food and more!  Tours of the Milton House will also be available all day at regular price.  Click on the photo to the left for more information.

October 15th:

The Milton Area Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism (MACCIT) will be hosting the Milton Malt & Hops Fest, a beer and wine tasting event, on October 15th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Miller Distribution Warehouse located in Milton at 616 Gateway Drive.  Tickets are $25 per person in advance or $30 per person at the door.  Click on the photo to the left for more information.

October 22nd:

The Goodrich Square Steering Committee will be hosting the Dash for the Splash on October 22nd to benefit the Goodrich Square Splash Park.  A 1-mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 8:15 a.m. followed by a 5K at 9:00 a.m.  The event will start and end near South Goodrich Park where the splash park will be located.  The cost is $15 for one person, $25 for two people, or $40 for a family.  Click on the photo to the left for more information.

The Parks & Recreation Commission will be hosting their annual Crossridge Park Seed Pick on October 22nd at 10 a.m.  The prairie seed that is picked at Crossridge Park will be used in certain areas of the City for beautification and to reduce mowing costs.  Click on the photo to the left for more information.

Dash for the Splash

The Goodrich Square Steering Committee will be hosting the Dash for the Splash on October 22, 2011 to benefit the Goodrich Square Splash Park. A 1-mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 8:15 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9:00 a.m. Registration will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the South Goodrich Park Pavilion. The event will start and end where the splash park will be located in South Goodrich Park near the intersection of High Street and Parkview Drive.

The cost is $15 for one person, $25 for two people, or $40 for a family. Each participant will receive a Dash for the Splash t-shirt. Extra t-shirts can be purchased for $8 each, and additional donations will also be accepted. The event is sponsored by several Milton area businesses.

The Goodrich Square Splash Park is part of an overall plan for the Goodrich Square downtown district that was finalized in 2010 as a response to the State Highway 26 bypass. The Goodrich Square Steering Committee was established in 2010 to work on implementing the various features of the master plan.

PD's Helmet Hero Received a New Helmet

The Milton Police Department's helmet hero, Calle, received a new helmet yesterday, courtesy of Street Smart! She also received more goodies from Dave's Ace Hardware, Piggly Wiggly, The Milton House, and Red Rooster as supporters of their helmet initiative.

Last week she was struck by a car while riding her bike on Madison Avenue near the Middle School.  She hit her head on the roadway, but was wearing a helmet.  The only abrasions were on her helmet.

Safety Tip: If a helmet is involved in a collision, it must be replaced.

Make Your Plans to be in Milton this Weekend!

Milton has a variety of activities occurring over September 17th and 18th. Below is some information on a few and links to additional information on the Milton Courier website.

• The Milton College Preservation Society will host their first annual Tailgate Party as part of the Milton College Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 4 p.m.

• The Milton Historical Society will be hosting their annual Twilight Tours at the Milton House from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011.

• The Gathering Place will be reviving a long-held Milton tradition this weekend by hosting a Steer Roast on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m.  A large bazaar and raffle will also be held in the lower level.

Opening on Historic Preservation Commission

City of Milton Mayor Thomas Chesmore is currently seeking applicants with an interest in historic preservation to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission through 2013.  Committee Questionnaires are available on the City’s website or at City Hall, 430 E. High Street.

Professional training or practical expertise in real estate, law, urban planning, or architecture is preferred but not necessary. The Historic Preservation Commission works to educate the community about historic properties and protect those properties.  Meetings are typically held on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.

Meeting for Landlords and Tenants in the City of Milton

The City of Milton will be hosting an informational meeting on September 29, 2011 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. for landlords and tenants about Ordinance #335 that adopted regulations from the Wisconsin State Statutes relating to rental housing.

On July 19, 2011, the Common Council passed Ordinance #335 that brought Wisconsin State Statute 704.07 into the Municipal Code of Ordinances. This section of the statutes relates to maintenance and standards for rental properties. Tenants can now make complaints about the condition of their rental unit to the municipality, rather than going through the Circuit Court System. This will make the process easier for those involved and provide more local control.

The informational meeting will cover the basics of the ordinance, the complaint process, and renting tips for landlords and tenants. Staff anticipates the meeting to be approximately one hour in length.

MACCIT Announces Milton & Crossroads Business Park Open House

 The Milton Area Chamber or Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MACCIT) announces a Business & Industrial Park Open House on Tuesday, September 13 from 11:30am-1:00pm at Ott Schweitzer, 616 Gateway Dr., Milton, WI. A buffet lunch will be provided, followed by a brief presentation regarding the 26/59 Bypass project and other related community and Crossroads Business Park development information. There will also be an opportunity for questions and industry feedback. 

According to Christina Slaback, MACCIT Executive Director, “this information exchange with area commercial/industrial Brokers and developers is an excellent opportunity to enhance business development relationships.” The MACCIT organization is partnering with the City of Milton to continue to market and promote the city and the Crossroads Business Park.

Press Release - Receiver Ball/Pin Thefts

Below is a recent press release from Milton Police Lieutenant John Conger regarding receiver ball/pin thefts.

The City of Milton Police Department is currently investigating a rash of thefts and attempted thefts that have occurred not only in Milton, but in other jurisdictions. On September 5th our agency took into custody 2 males, one age 17 and the other 16, on charges of Theft for their involvement in an incident involving a receiver ball and a pin off of a pickup truck in Milton. The investigation revealed that the suspects had also targeted vehicles in Janesville, Newville, and perhaps other neighboring communities.

"Rachel's Challenge" - Presentation 9-7-11

Below is a press release from Milton Police Lieutenant John Conger about an upcoming presentation called "Rachel's Challenge."



The City of Milton Police Department would like to announce their partnership with the Milton School District in promoting a very special presentation that is being brought to our community. Rachel Scott was the first victim of the Columbine shootings in 1999. Since that time Rachel’s family and friends have developed a presentation entitled “Rachel’s Challenge” which they bring to communities nation-wide. Rachel’s Challenge will visit Milton High School next Wednesday, September 7th. There will be student body presentations at 8:00am and 9:30am and an additional presentation at 7:00pm that will be open to the public. The presentations will be held in the High School’s Performing Arts Center. Rachel’s Challenges and the message of the presentation are as follows;

Challenge Objectives for Schools:

• Create a safe learning environment for all students by re-establishing civility and delivering proactive antidotes to school violence and bullying.
• Improve academic achievement by engaging students' hearts, heads and hands in the learning process.
• Provide students with social/emotional education that is both colorblind and culturally relevant.
• Train adults to inspire, equip and empower students to affect permanent positive change.
