Severe Weather: Blizzard and City of Milton Cancellations

The National Weather Service and Wisconsin Emergency Management officials notified City of Milton and other regional local government officials this afternoon that pending severe weather conditions are anticipated in Milton and throughout Rock County during the next 48 hours. As such, the City of Milton Common Council meeting scheduled for February 1, 2011 at 7 p.m. has been canceled. The meeting will likely be rescheduled for sometime next week. When the re-scheduled date is known, we will post that information on the blog and the City's website as well as update the City's official notice posting sites throughout Milton.

City of Milton Departments have been preparing for what is anticipated to be a very serious weather event, that includes a forecast that as of 2pm this afternoon called for heavy snow fall to begin late Tuesday afternoon up through Wednesday morning that is scheduled to result in between 12-18 inches of snow accumulation. Wind gusts of between 40-50 mph are also scheduled to accompany this storm on Tuesday night which will likely produce significant drifting, making travel extremely dangerous and ill-advised.

Additional information regarding City cancellations and closures will be broadcast and posted on WCLO and posted on all City communication outlets (Facebook, Twitter, website, and Milton Matters).

The Rock County Sheriff's Office issued a weather advisory and winter safe driving tips. Click here to view the information.

We are asking all residents to plan accordingly for this event, making sure they have necessary food, batteries and flashlights (in the event we experience a power outage) and other necessary household items to sustain your family for a few days in anticipation of this significant snowfall and drifting that may be associated with it, all which could make travel nearly impossible. We also ask that you listen to your radio and/or television for updates and other pertinent information related to this storm event.

Sincerely,

-Jerry Schuetz

National Crossing Guard Recognition Week

January 10-14th is National Crossing Guard Recognition week. In the City of Milton, we are fortunate to have a joint partnership with the School District of Milton that has 7 regular part-time and 3 substitute crossing guards who help our children and families get to school safely. In conjunction with national crossing guard week, those men and women will be recognized at our Public Safety Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11th, 2011 at 6pm with certificates of appreciation.

The job of crossing guard is not an easy one. These folks get up early, brave the elements of Wisconsin weather and traffic, all in the name of helping our kids get to school safely. If you see these dedicated men and women this week who help ensure the safety of our children, please stop and thank them for their dedicated service.

Sincerely,

-Jerry
