New Economic Development Initiatives in the City of Milton

The economy is continuing to recover from the recession and the City of Milton in partnership with the Milton Area Commerce Industry and Tourism (MACCIT) organization is exploring and implementing initiatives to assist the business community with regional economic development initiatives. The first three of those initiatives include the creation of the Small Business Development Loan Fund, the establishment of our jointly formed Small Business Task Force, and a formal review of the City of Milton’s regulations related to our sign code.

The Small Business Development Loan Fund is a joint project between the City of Milton and two of the City’s community banks, the Bank of Milton and First Community Bank. With donations from all three sources, a fund was developed that will grant loans to small businesses for capital purchases and other qualifying start up costs. The fund will assist small businesses in making investments in the City and help them get their small businesses started, providing one additional resource for entrepreneurs who are seeking to begin a small business in the City of Milton.

The Small Business Task Force is a joint project between the City of Milton and the MACCIT, and is designed to provide a venue for small businesses to communicate with city staff, and MACCIT’s executive director whereby business owners can enter a quarterly dialogue, learn about best practices, and network with similar businesses in helping the community best promote Milton’s business community. The first task force meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. at Ott Schweitzer, 616 Gateway Drive, Milton, WI.

The City’s review of our sign code is an on-going point of discussion among the Common Council, city staff, and the business community. Mayor Chesmore and MACCIT’s economic development committee endorsed a formal review of the code, which was authorized by the City’s Plan Commission earlier this month. The City decided to start reviewing the sign code to make it more business friendly and easier to understand.

For additional information about these initiatives, contact MACCIT Executive Director Christina Slaback at 608-868-6222 or City Administrator Jerry Schuetz at 608-868-6900 ext. 4.

Distracted Driving Awareness Program

Below is a press release from Milton Police Lieutenant John Conger regarding an upcoming Distracted Driving Awareness Program.

On Thursday, February 23rd we will be hosting a Distracted Driving Simulation activity in conjunction with Mercy Health System’s ThinkFirst program, and the Milton School District. The event will be held at Milton High School, during the high school basketball game that evening. The simulation will begin at 6pm, and continue throughout the game. The activity is an interactive set-up, in which, those participating will be playing a driving-based video game, and be asked to use your cell phone to make calls, send text message, etc. The activity is designed to make those of driving-age aware of the dangers of multitasking while operating a motor vehicle.

In 2009, more than 5,400 people died in the United States in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to be the result of a distracted driver. Additionally, approximately 448,000 people were injured in crashes of that nature.

Teens and family members are encouraged to participate in this event and then sign a distracted driver pledge, indicating they will not engage in distracting activities while driving a vehicle.

Press Release - February 10th Traffic Accident

Below is a press release from Milton Police Lieutenant John Conger regarding the two-vehicle traffic accident that occurred in Milton on Friday, February 10th.

On February 10th, at approximately 8:50pm the City of Milton Police Department responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash with multiple injuries at the intersection of STH 26 and Arthur Drive. Six people were transported as a result of their injuries from the crash. One of those victims, an 8 year old female, was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital, Janesville. One other victim, a 5 year old male was transported to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, via Med-Flight, and remains hospitalized for injuries suffered in the crash. All other victims were treated and released at either Mercy Hospital or St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville.

The initial investigation has revealed that a vehicle operated by Adolpho Torres, 31, of Fort Atkinson was turning northbound onto STH 26 from Arthur Drive when it was struck by a southbound vehicle. The southbound vehicle was operated by Howell Keebler, 55, of Janesville.

The deceased and the victim that remains hospitalized were in the vehicle operated by Mr. Torres. Mr. Torres and a 29 year old female in that vehicle were treated and released at Mercy Hospital. Mr. Keebler and a 39 year old female in his vehicle were treated and released at St. Mary’s Hospital, Janesville.

Also responding to the scene were the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Milton Fire Department, and Janesville Fire Department Paramedics. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting our agency with the ongoing investigation and reconstruction.

All occupants were wearing seatbelts and restraints in the incident, and alcohol, nor speed, appear to be a factor.

At this time, no citations have been issued, and the incident remains under investigation.

Below is a follow up press release from Lieutenant Conger from Saturday, February 11th.

Deceased, as a result of injuries sustained in last evening’s crash, is Anabel Zuniga, age 8, of Fort Atkinson.

Hospitalized at American Family Children’s Hospital, Madison, is Jared Zuniga, age 5, of Fort Atkinson.

Both victims are the children of the driver, Adolpho Zuniga-Torres.
