2012 Independence Day Celebration T-Shirts - Available Now!

The 2012 Independence Day Celebration t-shirts are now available at City Hall, located on the second floor of the Shaw Municipal Center, 430 E. High Street. The shirts cost $10 each with $1 from each sold going to Badger Honor Flight.

The t-shirts are khaki with forest green writing and blue with white writing. The sizes available are Youth Small and Medium and Adult Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and 2X Large.

Americans felt it was important to build memorials to honor the service and sacrifice of its veterans. Badger Honor Flight, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, has made it their mission to send every Veteran to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor at no charge to the Veteran. The current focus of Badger Honor Flight is Veterans from WWII and Korea and terminally ill Veterans from any conflict. The organization serves Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Lafayette, Richland, Rock, and Sauk counties, flying out of the Dane County Regional Airport. Since their first flight in 2010, they have flown a total of 7 flights flying 662 Veterans on this trip of a lifetime. It costs $92,000 per flight, and two are scheduled for this coming fall. Lil Tikes Bike Parade - June 29, 2012

The Celebrate Milton Committee and the Milton FFA Alumni are coordinating a Lil Tikes Bike Parade on June 29, 2012 at 6 p.m. at Schilberg Park in Milton.

Kids ages 12 and under are invited to decorate their bikes and ride around the 1-mile path at Schilberg Park, the location for the Milton 4th of July Celebration. There is no cost to participate in this event, but all participants must wear a helmet.

Kids with bicycles will not be able to participate in the Milton Independence Day Parade on July 4, 2012 at 1 p.m. unless they are part of another entry with adult supervision due to safety concerns.

Cooling Places Established for Thursday, June 28th

Due to the anticipated dangerously hot temperatures on Thursday, June 28, 2012, the City of Milton has established temporary cooling places for people who need to seek shelter and/or relief from the heat on June 28, 2012.

The City’s Council Chambers and the Milton Public Library will be open to residents as locations to seek relief from the extreme heat and stay cool. Both the Council Chambers and the Milton Public Library are located in the Shaw Municipal Center, 430 E. High Street. Another place to seek relief from the heat during the high temperatures in the City of Milton is The Gathering Place, 715 Campus Street. All locations are air conditioned, and will remain open during normally scheduled hours of operation to accommodate those who need and/or seek temporary relief from the heat. No overnight lodging is available at any of these established locations.

We are encouraging individuals to limit their time outside in the anticipated extreme heat to only that which is necessary and that people and their pets stay adequately hydrated throughout what is anticipated to be a very warm day.

With Milton’s annual 4th of July celebration approaching, we would like to touch on some legal and safety-related topics.

The actual 4th of July can be a long day for the entire family. It is filled with activities all day long, beginning early in the morning with the Independence Day Run and Walk. This is followed in the afternoon by the annual parade on Madison Avenue, and wraps up at sundown with the fireworks display. Mixed in with those events are generally family gatherings, picnics, and backyard BBQs. Officers with the Milton Police Department are required to work on this holiday, and we do our best to make your day safe and enjoyable. 

To achieve this goal we would like to ask for your cooperation in regards to a few things; 

• You need to be aware that very few fireworks are allowed to be discharged within the City, unless you have a permit. Essentially, anything other than snakes and sparklers are illegal, and discharging of them can result in a $114.00 forfeiture.
• No fireworks of any kind are permitted on the grounds of Schilberg Park. This includes sparklers and snakes. Possession of these materials at the park can also result in forfeitures. 
• While all children enjoy grabbing up as much candy as possible along the parade route, please keep them close to you, and out of the way of parade vehicles. Even though the parade moves slowly, the danger is still very real when near moving vehicles. Only people on foot can throw candy during the parade, and it is not permissible to do so from moving vehicles. However, that does not eliminate the risk, and attention to your little ones is paramount. Due to problems in the past, we will also not be tolerating large squirt guns, water hoses, etc. along the parade route. Please leave such items at home.
• Be patient with traffic congestion after the fireworks. We do as much as possible to move traffic along, and out of the congested areas quickly. 
• As always, drink responsibly. If necessary, arrange designated drivers ahead of time. 
• Keep track of your children, especially in crowded areas. Children can disappear in crowds quickly, and you must help keep a close eye on them. 
• We would also ask that you be respectful of others. As the night winds down, we are invariably dispatched to numerous loud music, fireworks, disorderly conduct, and alcohol related incidents. Please understand there is very little tolerance for any of this. If you are disturbing people in their own homes, at unreasonable times, citations will be issued, and if necessary, arrests will be made.
• Remember the legal drinking age in Wisconsin is 21. Distribution to underage persons, and consumption by underage persons will not be tolerated. This includes the beer tent at Schilberg, where Officers are assigned, as well as any other type of gathering where alcohol is provided. 
• Respect the posted No Parking areas. These areas are not posted to be an inconvenience, but rather for safety reasons. Violators will be ticketed, and quite possibly have their vehicles towed should they park in restricted areas. There is a handicapped parking area in front of the Milton Middle School for parade attendees. That lot will be monitored by a police intern and only those vehicles with the necessary stickers will be permitted to park there. 
• Have Fun! If you cooperate with your police department, and we all work together, this will undoubtedly be another festive and successful Independence Day celebration for our community.

We would also like to remind you to come join us on June 29th at Schilberg Park at 7pm. Local law enforcement officials will be playing the Milton Fire Department in a fundraising softball game. All proceeds raised that evening will help support the Milton Area Youth Center.

Burning Ban for Milton Fire District

The Rock County Fire Chiefs have issued a burning ban until there is a significant amount of rain fall.  The burning ban is for controlled/open burning.

A small campfire up to nine (9) square feet is allowed.  This ban includes all of the Milton Fire District. 

Press Release from Milton Police Department - Bicycle Accident

Here is a press release from the Milton Police Department about a recent bicycle accident.

On June 15th at approximately 11:35am the Milton Police Department and Milton Fire/EMS were dispatched to the intersection of John Paul Rd. and W. Madison Avenue for a traffic accident, with injury. Our initial investigation has determined that a 12 year old bicyclist was crossing Madison Avenue near that intersection when he was struck by an East bound vehicle. It does not appear that the operator of that vehicle had time to stop prior to the collision. 

Operating the motor vehicle was Danielle McCabe, 24, of 65 N. Janesville St., Milton. Ms. McCabe was cited for Causing Injury, While Operating With a Suspended License. She was also taken into custody and transported to the Rock County Jail due to an unrelated arrest warrant. 

The bicyclist had not been wearing a helmet, and was transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life threatening head and facial injuries.

Summer Concert in the Park Series Starts Tomorrow!

The 2012 Summer Concert in the Park Series kicks off tomorrow with the Hand-Picked Bluegrass Band.  The concert will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  All concerts are held at North Goodrich Park.  Various concessions will be available for purchase, including grilled hot dogs and brats with the proceeds benefiting The Gathering Place.

The concert series is organized by The Gathering Place and made possible by grants from The Milton Fund and The Alliant Energy Foundation.

Moms on a Mission Exchange (M.O.M.E.)

Moms on a Mission Exchange (M.O.M.E., pronounced "mommy") is a free clothing exchange/give-away, held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month at the Milton United Methodist Church, 241 Northside Drive.  The mission of the organization is to help families stretch their clothing budgets.

Mad Science - June 16th at 11 a.m.

Looking for a free and exciting event for the whole family?  The Milton Public Library is presenting Mad Science this Saturday, June 16 at 11:00 a.m.

Mad Science is a fast-paced show that allows audience members to take an active role in the experiments. The show is geared for all ages. No registration is required. The show is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Father's Day Classic - June 17, 2012

The Milton Area Youth Center (MAYC) is hosting the first Father's Day Classic on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at King Park and Central Park located on Hilltop Drive near the Post Office in Milton.  The event will feature Disc Golf, Baggo, and Bocce Ball Tournaments.  There will also be a bouncy house, snack stand, and a piano smash.  For more information, contact Executive Director Pamela Thomas at mayc.director@gmail.com.

Milton Concerts in the Park Season Begins Next Week!

The second annual Concerts in the Park season will kick off Thursday, June 14, 2012 with a performance by the Hand-Picked Bluegrass Band.  Thursday, July 12 enjoy the sounds of the 18 piece Main Street Big Band. The concert series concludes on Thursday, August 9th with a performance by the PiperRoad Spring Band . All concerts are free and open to the public. They are held in North Goodrich Park and begin at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase. Please bring your own lawn chairs. In case of rain the concert will take place at The Gathering Place 715 Campus.

Nonprofit Task Force Meeting - June 12, 2012 at 10 a.m.

The City of Milton and the Milton Area Chamber of Commerce, Industry, & Tourism (MACCIT) worked together to develop a Nonprofit Task Force. The first meeting was held in March 2012, and the second quarterly meeting of the group will be on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. in the City Hall Break Room, located on the lower level of the Shaw Municipal Center, 430 E. High Street.

At the Nonprofit Task Force meetings, leaders of nonprofit organizations in the area have a chance to discuss their upcoming projects and receive feedback on ideas or problems they are experiencing. In addition, it will allow attendees to make connections with similar organizations.

Rock/Walworth County FastPitch Competition

Rock County 5.0, in collaboration with various regional economic and workforce development partners, announced that it is cosponsoring a business idea contest. The Rock/Walworth County FastPitch Competition, which is designed to provide an incubation platform for emerging entrepreneurial and small business ideas, will be held at BTC's Central Campus on August 8, 2012. Liberty Park Ceremony - June 2nd

Don't forget to come to Liberty Park tomorrow for a ceremony and to view the renovations that took place last October, thanks to the Chevrolet Diamonds & Dreams program.  A Milton Thunder game is scheduled for 10 a.m. followed by the ceremony at noon and a Milton Rec game at 12:30 p.m.

Open House at the City of Milton Public Works Garage

An Open House for the City of Milton Public Works Garage will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Public Works Garage is located at 150 Northside Drive.

A ribbon cutting will take place at 7 p.m. at the beginning of the Common Council meeting that will also be held at the Public Works Garage on June 6, 2012.

Tours will be conducted, and refreshments including cookies and juice will be provided. Pens will be given out to attendees to commemorate the event. Attendees can have their pictures taken next to the snow plow truck with a hard hat and safety vest.
