Wisconsin Heat Awareness Day - June 12, 2014
In 2013, Wisconsin had 11 confirmed heat related deaths. Many of those victims were socially isolated maintaining little contact with family and friends. This is why it is vitally important to check in on family, friends, and neighbors during extreme heat, especially those who are particularly vulnerable, like families with very young children, the elderly, and people who are on medications that could make them more susceptible to injury from extreme heat.
In 2012, Wisconsin had confirmed 24 heat related deaths, most occurred during five days of Excessive Heat Warnings from July 2-6. The heat index rose to 105 F degrees for 48 hours with night time lows of 75 F. It was the second hottest and third longest heat wave in Wisconsin. None of the victims had air conditioning and they did not seek shelter at one of the many cooling centers which opened around the state.
In 2011, excessive heat claimed five lives and injured more than 100 people in Wisconsin during the July 17-21 heat wave. Once again none of those victims had air conditioning. The combination of the warm temperatures and high humidity caused the heat index to rise between 100 F and 117 F degrees.
In 1995, two major killer heat waves affected most of Wisconsin resulting in 154 heat-related deaths and over 300 heat-related illnesses.
Summer heat waves have been the biggest weather-related killers in Wisconsin for the past 50 years, far exceeding tornadoes, severe storms and floods combined. Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States. People at higher risk of a heat-related illness include:
- Older adults
- Infants and young children
- People with chronic heart or lung problems
- People with disabilities
- Overweight persons
- Those who work outdoors or in hot settings
- Users of some medications, especially those taken for mental disorders, movement disorder, allergies, depression, and heart or circulatory problems
- People who are socially isolated and don’t know when or how to cool off – or when to call for hel

Richard Fry is the 2014 Milton Independence Day Parade Marshall
Richard’s family moved to Milton in 1959, and he graduated from Milton High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969, and completed Basic Training at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. Richard also completed Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) at Fort Polk in Louisiana and Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Academy at Fort Benning in Georgia. He served in Vietnam and Cambodia, and was wounded in Cambodia on May 24, 1970. Richard received a Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal with V Device and Oak Leaf Cluster. He medically retired from the US Army on July 2, 1971.
Richard has also been an active member of the Milton community. He has co-owned and operated four different restaurants in Milton, and he ran Ervin Fry & Sons Excavating with his father and brother, Bill, for seven years. Richard worked for 22 years at Frank Bros. before retiring in 2010, and during that time he was actively involved in the construction of Schilberg Park. He is a life member of DAV, VFW Post 1879, Milton FFA Alumni, and currently serves as the Commander of American Legion Post 367.
Richard has taken a lead role in the fundraising and coordination of the Milton Area Veterans Memorial project that expands on previous work done by local residents and community organizations. The dedication ceremony is set to take place on July 5, 2014 at 2 p.m.
Richard lives in Milton with his wife, Phyllis, and has six children: Tiffany (Greg) White, Durant, IA; Shannon (Matt) Juckett, Evansville; John (Hilary) Fry, Corona, CA; Tracey (Lee) Morehart, Milton; Ashley Fry (Dan Nelson), Middleton; and Delaney (Michael) Blabaum, Janesville. He also has 16 grandchildren.
PARADE THEME AND REGISTRATION
Registration forms to participate in the 2014 Milton Independence Day Parade, presented by Air Products, are now available at Milton City Hall, 430 E. High Street, Suite 3, and on the City of Milton website (www.milton-wi.gov ). The parade will take place on July 4, 2014 at 1 p.m. The Milton Independence Day Parade theme this year is “Honoring America’s Heroes.”
In an effort to assist with planning for the event, participants are asked to submit completed applications to City Hall by noon on June 20, 2014. In the interest of animal safety and to comply with requirements from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, parade entries with horses will be required to show documentation of the current Coggins test during parade line up on July 4th in order to participate in the parade. All motorized vehicles must be driven by a licensed driver. Parade officials will ask to see proof of a valid driver license during the parade line up on July 4th.
The Celebrate Milton Committee is also looking for volunteers to help at the parade by lining up parade participants. If you are interested, please contact Inga Cushman at 868-6900 or by e-mail at icushman@milton-wi.gov.

Press Release - Participate in the Go Slow Ride on June 11th
This ride is the third of a series of Slow Cycle bike rides sponsored by The Janesville Velo Club. Slow Cycle is just what the name implies, a ride that goes no more than nine miles per hour and covers 8 to 12 miles of riding.
This is a supported and non drop ride. This means if you suffer a breakdown, physical or mechanical, you will get a ride back to the start. On this ride no one gets left behind, the ride travels at the pace of the slowest rider, after all this is the slow ride.
The next ride will be the Pie Ride hosted by Janesville Morning Rotary and held on June 14th. The Go Ride Series will continue on July 9th and visit Riverside Park.
There will be a free post ride treat, courtesy of Air Products, at the Cold Stone Creamery.

Milton Public Library's Spark Lab
Makerspaces offer hands-on experiences in creative community workspaces where people can build and experiment with art, craft, and technology projects. It's difficult to find hands-on access to anything for free, but Spark Lab will offer activities with a 3D Printer, video cameras, iPad minis, Stop Motion Creation Station, light box for drawing and calligraphy, a sewing machine, and art supplies such as easels, drawing pads, and various assortment of water color paint.
When thinking of libraries, you wouldn't necessarily think of robotics, stop motion animation, or computer science classes, but literacy is so much more than simply learning to read. There's math literacy, technical literacy, and more.
We hope you'll stop by our Kickoff Party on June 16th from 11 am – 1 pm and from 6-8 pm. Come and enjoy demonstrations, hands-on activities, and refreshments.
