City of Milton Announces Commitment to Community Recognition Dinner

Mayor Frazier and the City of Milton Common Council are proud to announce the revival of an old tradition. On February 20th the City will hold the Commitment to Community Recognition Dinner to honor just a few of the many who have worked so diligently to make and to keep our community strong. The event is being held at The Gathering Place, and will start at 6 p.m. and individual tickets are $25 or $45 for a couple.

The beauty of Milton is found in the sum of the efforts of thousands of friends and neighbors, teachers and business people, public employees and volunteers. Far too often those efforts go unrecognized, although they are always appreciated. While very few do what they do to make this community strong because they believe they will be recognized for it, the City believes those efforts are key to the high quality of life in Milton and are worthy of such acknowledgement. The following awards will be presented at the event:
  • Citizen of the Year
  • Commitment to Outstanding Community Service
  • Kid of the Year
  • City of Milton Employee of the Year
  • Commitment to Kids Award
  • Police Officer of the Year
  • Firefighter of the Year
Tickets for the Commitment to Community Recognition Dinner are available for sale at Milton City Hall, 430 E. High Street. Individual tickets are $25 or $45 for a couple. The evening is slated to begin at 6:00 pm with a cash bar and dinner to begin at 6:30 pm with the ceremony to follow dinner. The event features a buffet dinner with Beef Stroganoff and Baked Herb Chicken. There are only 130 tickets available as seating is limited for this honoring event.

City of Milton Allocates Nonprofit Funding for Youth Programming

The City of Milton Common Council voted at their January 21st meeting to allocate $500 to the Milton Youth Coalition for the development of an anti-bullying application (ap) for electronic devices and $2,000 to the YMCA of Northern Rock County for their youth scholarship program. In late December, Mayor Frazier and fellow Council members stated that despite the tough decisions they have to make each and every budget cycle, that improving the quality of life for youth and families in the City of Milton is of critical importance, and as such, made the funding a priority in their 2014 budget and service plan.

The Milton Youth Coalition will use the City’s funding to develop an anti-bullying ap that is being developed in partnership with the School District of Milton. The intent of the ap is to have it available on smart phones and tablets, and it will be readily available for students to learn about and possibly report bullying in the Milton community. A status report on the project will be provided to the Council once the ap is developed and installed throughout the District’s electronic devices.

The YMCA of Northern Rock County’s youth scholarship program offers financial support for approximately 20 youth who are faced with financial limitations in order attend programs or activities at the YMCA. Quarterly updates on the program and its users will be provided to the Council.

For more information, please contact City Administrator Jerry Schuetz at (608) 868-6900 or by email at jschuetz@milton-wi.gov.

Milton Public Library Announces the Addition of Mango Languages

www.miltonpubliclibrary.org

Milton Public Library is pleased to announce that it now offers the Mango Languages online language-learning system to its patrons offering instruction in over 60 languages. The learning system is accessible by going to the library website, www.miltonpubliclibrary.org, and clicking on the Mango badge on the right side of the page.

From home, customers will need to create a “profile” the first time they log in. They will be asked for their Milton Public Library card bar code number, an email address and a password. Customers can also use Mango on the public computers at the library.

Learning a new language with Mango Languages is free for all library patrons, and offers a fast and convenient solution for our community’s increasing language-learning needs. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Users learn actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information they have already learned.

Mango is available in two versions. One is Mango Complete, a 100-lesson course that is designed to provide a deep understanding of a language and its culture. The second is Mango Basic, which teaches everyday greetings, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time and is designed to appeal to a beginner in a new language. There are more than 40 foreign language courses available and 16 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

"We are thrilled to add our library to the growing list of libraries across the country who have added Mango to their resources," said Library Director Lisa Brooks. "Some people need to learn a second language for business or travel reasons. Others just want to because they think it would be interesting. No matter the reason, learning the language should be fun. With Mango, it definitely is."

To learn more about Mango and get a preview of what the program has to offer, stop by the library and we will give you an introduction. You can access Mango through the library website at www.miltonpubliclibrary.org.

For more information, contact the library at 608-868-7462.

Community Meeting on January 20th for the Crossridge Park Playground

http://www.ci.milton.wi.us/DocumentCenter/View/337
Milton is building a playground at Crossridge Park, and the Parks & Recreation Commission needs your help! The Commission will be hosting a community meeting on January 20, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Parker YMCA Youth Activity Room, 1360 Parkview Drive, to discuss the design and development of the playground and inform the public how they can be involved in the building of the playground.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) and national non-profit KaBOOM! awarded the City of Milton a $20,000 Let’s Play City Construction Grant as announced September 9, 2013. The City of Milton received the grant because it was selected as a 2013 Playful City USA community by KaBOOM! on May 7, 2013. The City will use the grant to build a new playground at Crossridge Park near the new Parker YMCA with community involvement using the KaBOOM! Community Build Model, which requires the use of volunteers to construct the playground.

The Parks & Recreation Commission is also requesting that community members submit their ideas for the design of the playground. Ideas can be submitted through the Community Voice Module on the City’s website (http://www.milton-wi.gov/communityvoice), emailed to icushman@milton-wi.gov, or dropped off at City Hall (430 E. High Street).

City of Milton Notification of Road Closure

NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSURE AT 15 PLUMB STREET

The City of Milton seeks to alert residents and travelers in the City of Milton of an impending road closure on Plumb Street, near Madison Avenue. Staff from JP Cullen has notified us that between the dates of Jan. 13th, 2014 through February 3rd, 2014 the road and access to property at 15 Plumb Street will be closed and/or have restricted traffic associated with the construction of the Advanced Manufacturing Center. A 120 foot crane will be present at various times throughout the upcoming three weeks, which is the cause for the traffic restrictions in the area over the next three weeks.

In the interests of public safety, motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to stay away from the area during this time period of construction. The School District of Milton has been alerted to the road closure, and is also communicating information regarding the road closure to students and families within the School District. Students and/or parents who utilize the area for student commute to and from school and/or student pick-up should plan alternate routes of travel during this time period.
